Christian Holmes- Decalogue

The Decalogue was easily one of the most brutal pieces of film that I have ever seen. Despite being in a foreign language, I was gripped by the stories and captivated by the plots of the two episodes we watched.

The first episode on the first commandment of the Decalogue was exceptionally thought provoking. The manner in which the man related to computers boarded on idolatry. He put his full trust and faith in the computer. This entrusting of faith led him to allow his son out on the ice pond. When the ice broke, not only did his son drown, but his idol (the computer) went up in smoke. The episode subtly communicates the idea that the world is unpredictable and that one must put their faith in God rather than the things of this world.

The fifth episode on "Thou Shalt Not Kill" was absolutely horrifying. The way that the director depicted murder was nothing short of brutal and repulsive. However, it was also captivating. I could not look away from this vicious and seemingly senseless act of murder. It was drawn out, detailed, and emotionally heavy. The episode portrayed murder in its fullest and most evil light. One element to this episode that I found really profound was the contrast between the murder and the execution. Both were equally intense and ruthless. It was as if the film maker was trying to say "murder is murder". Whatever the context, the murders were brutal and vicious and showed the evil of killing.
