Christian Holmes- General Topic 3

An idea I have been curious about is whether or not all of these religious symbols are intentional. I see two camps in this discussion. The first, is that which states that the director has total control over a film and would not put anything in the movie that did not have purpose and meaning for being there. The second camp, is that which says that we (we being students in this class) are purposefully reading into the films and looking for symbolism. The mind often creates what it wants to find, so it would be very possible that we are inserting ideas and images that are not really present in the film.

The second question I often find myself asking is whether or not the first question really matters. Even if we as the audience are inserting meaning, that means we must seen the ground for said meaning. After all, no one would simply spout off possible allusions in a college setting. Even if the director did not mean for the imagery to occur, it did nonetheless and people are experiencing the imagery and encountering religions ideas. Regardless of whether or not the imagery is intentional, the foundation for the imagery is there. The real question, is who bring the imagery: the director, or the audience. And the follow up to that question, is whether or not that really matters. In my opinion it does not matter in the slightest, as long as the grounds and inspiration are present. The audience brings as much meaning and purpose to the film as the director does.
