Tara Thompson - Outside reading #2

In Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling he talks about Abraham from the Old Testament. Kierkegaard thinks that Abe is an example of real faith. He shares the story of Abe taking his son Isaac to be sacrificed to God, even after he had been promised this son and promised that he would carry on Abraham’s name. Abe had patiently waited (although messing up a few times) and been true to God. Kierkegaard talks about how this type of faith is so important. I really appreciate Kierkegaard for a lot of reasons. First of all he is one of the only Christian philosophers within the Existentialists, which shows his own boldness. Also, he approached existentialism in a completely different light that I think makes it look that much better. His view of existentialism includes faith in something that much more powerful than us as humans. Nietzsche and Heidegger try to create a completely new “human” : The Overman and Dasein for society to follow. The funny thing is that they create these two things out of disdain for Christianity, however, their creation is extremely similar to that of Jesus Christ. However, because they lacked faith they tried to create their own being.
