Sally Duff-Outside Reading: Blue Like Jazz

The book Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller was recently adapted into a movie.  When I first heard about this, I was a bit confused because the book is basically a ton of Don’s stories about his life that flow together to shape his faith.  I wondered how they would make a movie about it.  But I thought they did a very good job.  They took a few select stories and focused on Don’s conversion to Christianity.  I like the movie a lot.  It is not a typical “Christian” movie.  There’s drugs and sex and drinking and even some cursing.  Don gets angry.  He yells about how he hates the church.  They confront issues like the Crusades and priests molesting alter boys and all that really messed up stuff.  They do not hold back.  But that’s what makes the movie great.  It’s so real.  Because people get mad about that stuff.  Christians get mad about that stuff. It’s absurd that it’s not in more movies because everyone’s  thinking it.  But they weren’t afraid to address it.
